Why You Should Niche Down Your Coaching Business If You Want to Be Successful

The Four Reasons Why You Should Niche Down

Niching down your coaching business is a smart strategy for several reasons. Especially if you’re trying to build a more successful and more profitable coaching practice. Here are the top four reasons to do it.

Targeted Marketing: When you narrow down your coaching business to a specific niche, you can easily target your ideal clients. Your content and marketing strategies will speak directly to their needs and pain points, making it more likely that they will resonate with your message and be interested in working with you.

Credibility: Clients are more likely to trust someone who specializes in their specific problem or goal rather than a generalist coach who tries to be everything to everyone. When I talk about this notion, I call it “marinating in the problem space.” There’s a specific kind of credibility that comes from being able to predict specific challenges because you know the space so well.

Referral Marketing: When you focus on a specific niche, you become more memorable and distinctive in the minds of your clients. This makes it more likely that people will refer you to others who need your services, leading to more business and growth opportunities.

Higher Fees: Lastly, when you are a specialist in a particular niche, you can charge higher fees because clients are willing to pay a premium for expert advice and guidance.

Four Reasons Why You Should Niche Down Your Coaching Business

Examples of Coaches Who Have a Niche

It’s easy to say, “niche down” but hard to do in practice. Here are five examples of folks who have done it. As you dig into what they’re doing, and how they’re doing it, you can see the power of a niche.

Denise Duffield-Thomas: Denise is a money mindset coach who has niched down her coaching business to focus on helping women overcome their limiting beliefs around money and achieve financial abundance. She has built a thriving coaching practice and is the author of several bestselling books on the topic. Her niche is shaped by WHO she serves as well as WHAT she focuses on.

Marie Forleo: Marie is a well-known business and life coach who has niched down her focus on helping women entrepreneurs build successful online businesses. She has built a thriving coaching practice and is a well-known thought leader in the online business world. Her niche is also shaped by WHO she serves as well as WHAT she focuses on.

Jill Stanton: Jill is a business coach who has niched down her business to focus on helping online business owners build successful membership sites. She is the co-founder of Screw The Nine To Five, a highly successful coaching program that has helped thousands of entrepreneurs build successful online businesses. Her niche is shaped by WHAT she focuses on.

Selena Soo: Selena is a business coach who has niched down her coaching business to focus on helping entrepreneurs and business owners build relationships with influencers and get publicity for their businesses. She has built a highly successful coaching program and is a sought-after speaker and thought leader in the online business world. Her niche is shaped by WHAT she focuses on.

Jennifer Bourn: Jennifer is a coach who has niched down her business to focus on freelancers, helping them build their business. She’s built a highly successful coaching program that leverages both online courses and live cohort events. Her niche is shaped by WHO she serves, WHAT she focuses on, and HOW she delivers it.

As you notice, building a niche is all about defining a focus. It can either be:

  • What you focus on
  • Who you serve
  • How you deliver results

The 6 Steps to Niche Down Your Coaching Business

Remember that niching down your coaching business is a process that takes time and experimentation. Don’t be afraid to try different niches and pivot as needed until you find the one that feels like the best fit for you and your clients.

Here are the practical steps to take to figure out how to narrow down your niche as a coach:

  1. Identify your passions and strengths: Start by making a list of the things you’re passionate about and areas where you excel. These could be skills, topics, or industries that you have experience in or enjoy working with.
  1. Research your market: Conduct market research to identify the needs and pain points of your intended target audience. Look for gaps in the market where you can provide a unique solution or perspective.
  1. Evaluate your competition: Look at what other coaches are offering in your target niche. Identify what sets you apart from them and what unique value you can bring to your clients.
  1. Define your ideal client: Create a detailed profile of your ideal client, including their demographics, psychographics, goals, and challenges. This will help you tailor your coaching services to meet their specific needs and preferences.
  1. Test your niche: Before committing fully to a niche, test it out by offering a limited version of your coaching services to a small group of clients. This will allow you to gauge the demand for your services and refine your niche based on feedback.
  1. Refine and adjust: As you work with clients in your niche, pay attention to what is working and what isn’t. Use this feedback to refine your coaching services and adjust your niche as needed.

How To Know You’ve Niched Down Enough

As you can imagine, niching down can be a never-ending process. So here are the signs that you’ve niched down far enough:

  • If you know your ideal client, and they have no trouble finding you, you’re probably good.
  • If your value proposition is tied to the niche, you’ve likely gotten to the right spot and don’t need to go further.
  • If your revenue is moving forward and up and to the right (measuring how well you’ve done), you’re likely in your sweet spot.

Finally, you know you’ve found your perfect niche if you feel excited and energized about what you’re doing. That’s the best way to know you’ve “found your people.”
